SITE-SPECIFIC RISKS & CONTROLS

Live Restaurant Environment – Risk: Interaction between construction activities and operating restaurant staff/customers.
Controls:

• Construction zones to be clearly isolated from operational areas
• Temporary hoarding / barriers installed where required
• Works staged to minimise disruption to restaurant operations
• No unauthorised access to BOH or customer areas

Existing Services – Risk: Existing kitchen equipment, gas lines, electrical and fire services.
Controls:

• Isolation of services prior to works where required
• Hot works permits for grinding, welding, or cutting
• Fire extinguisher available at all times during hot works
• Existing fire services (hose reels, extinguishers) to remain accessible

Electrical Hazards – Risk: Live electrical systems in an operational commercial kitchen.
Controls:

• Electrical isolations coordinated with restaurant management
• Only licensed electricians to work on electrical systems
• Lock-out / tag-out procedures implemented where required
• Temporary lighting and leads tested and tagged

Fire & Emergency Exit – Risk: Obstruction of emergency exits and paths of travel.
Controls:

• Emergency exits and exit signage kept clear at all times
• No storage of materials in egress paths
• Emergency lighting and exit signage maintained as per AS/NZS 2293.1
• Assembly point communicated to all workers

Cold rooms, Freezers & Confined Spaces – Risk: Working in cold rooms / freezer rooms and restricted BOH spaces.
Controls:

• Doors not to be lockable (as per approval conditions)
• Communication maintained when working in cold/freezer rooms
• Adequate lighting and ventilation provided
• Manual handling controls for heavy equipment

Demolition & Structural Alterations – Risk: Falling objects, structural instability during alterations.
Controls:

• Engineer-certified sequencing of structural works
• Exclusion zones during demolition
• Overhead protection where required
• PPE mandatory in demolition zones

Slips, trips & Hygiene – Risk: Wet floors, grease residues, uneven surfaces in BOH areas.
Controls:

• Slip-resistant footwear mandatory
• Floors kept clean and dry where possible
• Temporary ramps / edge protection installed
• Good housekeeping enforced daily

Deliveries & waste removal – Risk: Interface between deliveries, waste removal, and restaurant operations.
Controls:

• Deliveries scheduled outside peak service times where possible
• Clear loading/unloading procedures
• Waste removed regularly to avoid BOH congestion
• Bin areas kept tidy and accessible
•  

Minimum PPE:

• Safety boots
• Hi-vis clothing (BOH & external works when required)
• Safety glasses
• Hearing protection (task dependent)
• Gloves and respiratory protection as required

KEY TERMS OF ENTRY

• Respect towards clients, staff, and other trades is mandatory.
• Non-compliance with site rules may result in removal from site.
• Report all incidents, near misses, and injuries immediately to Built by Athena – Site Supervisor.

SITE AMENITIES & EMERGENCY

• First Aid Kit: Located in the blue safety box onsite
• Fire Extinguisher: Provided in kitchen
• Toilets: Use site toilets, keep tidy
• Emergency Assembly Point: Front boundary near Landershute road

SITE RULES

• Induction Sign in by everyone entering the site.
• Keep the site clean and tidy – rubbish to be placed in designated skips.
• Materials to be stored safely – no blocking access paths.
• Tools and fixings to be cleared daily; use magnetic broom along driveway access before leaving site (to prevent screws/nails on roadways).
• No smoking, drugs, or alcohol permitted onsite.
• Adhere to all SWMS controls relevant to your tasks
